Page Types You Design, Not Pick
Squarespace gives you its page types and its section layouts. In WordPress a service page, a location page or a project gallery can be built the way your business needs it, not the way a template allows.
People usually call us about Squarespace when they want a kind of page the templates do not offer, or code the editor will not take. Those are the problems WordPress solves well.
Squarespace gives you its page types and its section layouts. In WordPress a service page, a location page or a project gallery can be built the way your business needs it, not the way a template allows.
Tracking scripts, schema markup, a booking widget from your scheduling software. On WordPress you add them in the theme or with a plugin, and they live in files you can read.
Squarespace exports part of a site. WordPress exports all of it, because it is your files and your database on a server with cPanel. If you outgrow us, the next move is a copy.
The other side
Squarespace is good at what it was built for. These are the cases where I would tell you to leave it alone.
Photographers, designers and small studios often pick Squarespace because the templates look good with very little effort. If your site is a portfolio and you are happy with it, I would not move it.
Squarespace keeps editing, hosting, SSL and updates in one login. WordPress has more moving parts. If you edit weekly and never want to think about plugins, Squarespace is the simpler life.
If Squarespace Commerce or its scheduling tool is working for you, those pieces need real replacements on WordPress. That is a project with a cost, and it has to buy you something specific.
If you stay, run the WordPress export once anyway and keep the file. It is free, it takes a few minutes, and it is a record of your content outside Squarespace.
The move
This is a partial export plus a rebuild. The export handles the typing. The layout and the page types it skips take hands-on work.
Need a new design while you are at it? That is a website build, quoted through our quote form before any work starts.
Squarespace builds an XML file of the content it can export. We use it as the starting point for pages, the main blog and its comments.
Extra blogs, portfolio and store pages, audio and video blocks, headers, footers and custom CSS get rebuilt by hand. Original images and PDFs are downloaded separately.
We map old addresses to new ones, you check every page on a preview, then the domain moves. Squarespace stays live until you say go.
No. Squarespace says its export covers layout pages, one blog page, text and image blocks, and some gallery pages. Album, index, portfolio and store pages, extra blogs, video and audio blocks, and custom CSS do not export. The export saves typing. It does not save the design.
No. Squarespace does not export trial sites, so the site needs to be active when we pull the file. If your subscription is about to lapse, call before it does.
We do. Hosting comes with free migration assistance. Rebuilding the parts the export leaves out is web design work, and we quote it in writing before we start. Our Squarespace move guide covers the details step by step.
Most single-business Squarespace sites fit on Foundation, which covers up to 3 domains and 10 GB of NVMe storage. If you run several sites or a lot of media, Business gives you 50 GB and unlimited domains.
