Bluehost alternative

Looking for cPanel? Bluehost moved it.

You signed up for WordPress hosting and got a dashboard you have to relearn, a renewal rate printed under the sale price, and a support line that does not know your site. We run WordPress on full cPanel in East Canton, Ohio, month to month.

Standard tools, one price, one person.

Bluehost is a big, well-known WordPress host and plenty of people are happy there. These are the reasons the ones who call us give for leaving.

cPanel, Not a Dashboard to Relearn

Bluehost says its current WordPress hosting uses a customized dashboard instead of traditional cPanel. That is fine until your web person, or a tutorial, tells you to open cPanel and there is nothing to open. Every plan here has full cPanel.

The Year-Two Bill Is the Year-One Bill

Bluehost lists its sale price against a 36-month term and prints the higher renewal rate right under it. We bill month to month and the renewal is the same price you started at. There is no second number to find.

No Domain That Changes Price Later

Bluehost's free domain is for the first year, then it renews at the going rate. Your domain stays wherever you want it, and you see its real cost from the start.

The other side

When Bluehost is the better choice

Moving hosts is work, even when we do most of it. Here is when staying put makes more sense.

  • You like the Bluehost dashboard

Some people never want to see cPanel. If the customized dashboard does what you need and you never call support, that is a real reason to stay.

  • You want a host WordPress.org recommends

Bluehost is on WordPress.org's short list of recommended hosts, and has been for a long time. If that endorsement matters to you, we are not on that list.

  • You are early in a prepaid term

If you paid for three years last spring, that money is spent. Put a reminder in your calendar a couple of months before renewal and call us then.

  • The site is a side project

If the site does not bring in customers, the intro price on a long term is hard to beat, and we are not trying to beat it.

The people who should move are the ones whose site brings in work and who want to call someone who knows it. If that is not you yet, stay where you are.

The move

What switching actually involves

A Bluehost move is a WordPress move. The only real question at the start is whether your account still has cPanel, and that only changes how we take the copy.

You give us access and a few minutes to check the preview. We do the rest, and we do not ask you to cancel anything until the new site is running.

  1. Check which Bluehost setup you have

Bluehost says some older shared plans still include cPanel and newer WordPress plans do not. If yours has cPanel, we take a full account backup. If not, we copy WordPress itself: files and database.

  2. Find out where the domain and email live

The domain may be registered at Bluehost, at another registrar, or somewhere nobody remembers. Email may be on Bluehost hosting or on a separate Microsoft or Google account. We write all of it down before touching anything.

  3. Build the copy here and check it

The site goes up on a temporary address. You click through pages, forms, logins, and anything that takes payment. Nothing points here until you approve it.

  4. Move mailboxes and test them

If mail is on Bluehost, we recreate the mailboxes here, copy the messages over, and test send and receive on your own phone and computer.

  5. Switch DNS, then cancel

We lower the TTL, change the records, and watch both sides. You cancel Bluehost after the new site has been running for a few days, not before.

Questions

My Bluehost account does not have cPanel. Can it still be moved?

Yes. WordPress is WordPress underneath any dashboard. We need the files and the database, and Bluehost gives you ways to get both. If you are not sure what access you have, we will look at it with you on the phone.

I got a free domain with Bluehost. Do I lose it if I leave?

No. The domain is registered to you. You can keep it at Bluehost and point it here, or transfer it to another registrar. Bluehost's terms say the free year renews at their regular rate, so check what that will be.

Will my site go down during the move?

Most moves can be done with little to no downtime when DNS is planned right. Your Bluehost site keeps running until the copy here is approved and the records are switched.

Do I have to sign a long contract to get a fair price?

No. Every plan is month to month, the renewal is the same price as month one.
